Stress management through lifestyle changes
- We always see that stress differs from individual to individual. Same factor or same situation can have different intensity of reaction in different persons. eg A person may get irritated if someone disturbs him, while someone else may get angry.
- Same situations can cause a different effect on different individuals. eg some people enjoy mocking, while others get irritated and some may be sensitive to reprimand and some may not be.
- We get to see many expressions of a stress like anger, fear, suspicion, anxiety, worry and much more…
So in short,”Problem is not a problem, but the reaction to the problem is a problem.”
Stress isn’t always bad, in small doses, rather it can help you to perform under pressure and motivate you to do your best. But when you’re constantly running in emergency mode, your mind and body pay the price.
If you tend to get stressed out frequently, as many of us do in today’s demanding world, your body may be in a heightened state of stress most of the time. Which affects each and every cell of our body, that can lead to serious health problems.
Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can suppress your immune system, upset your digestive and reproductive systems, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and also can speed up the aging process.
Stress – How it affects our body:
- Blood pressure rises
- Breathing becomes more rapid
- Digestive system slows down
- Heart rate (pulse) rises
- Immune system goes down
- Muscles become tense
- We do not sleep (heightened state of alertness)
Stress – How it affects by external causes
- Major life changes
- Work or school
- Relationship difficulties
- Financial problems
- Children and family
Stress – How it affects by internal causes
- Pessimism
- Inability to accept uncertainty
- Rigid thinking, lack of flexibility
- Negative self-talk
- Unrealistic expectations / perfectionism
- All or nothing attitude
The Buddha was not upset by these insults. Instead, he asked the young man, “Tell me, if you buy a gift for someone, and that person does not take it, to whom does the gift belong?”
The young man was surprised to be asked such a strange question and answered, “It would belong to me, because I bought the gift.”
The Buddha smiled and said, “That is correct. And it is exactly the same with your anger. You are getting angry on me and insulting me. It is up to you to insult me, but it’s up to me to not to accept them, as I do not like to get burdened unnecessarily. Since the anger belongs to you, you are then the only one who becomes unhappy, not me. All you have done is hurt yourself.”
Moral of the story
In conclusion, when an angry person approaches you, it’s important to try to stay even minded. You can achieve this through right understanding, right knowledge of the situation and having the right motivation for the interaction. It is same with the all situations and all emotions.

YOUR REACTION TO THE PROBLEM IS PROBLEM“
